Weekend at the grandparents

This past weekend we spent in Maryland with Josh's parents AKA Grammy and Granddaddy by the kids.  We hadn't been down there for 5 months as a family (the kids went by themselves a couple times).  Granddaddy's birthday was on Friday and since the boys are really into birthdays, we decided to go then.  They fully expected an "all out" birthday party...for a 67 year old...yes, I know...silly :)

The drive took an hour longer than usual due to construction.  Even though we never stopped moving, the boys were convinced we had decided not to go!  We had to listen to the usual "Are we there yet? and How many more minutes?"  But, once we arrived, Grammy did not disappoint them!  She had balloons and a banner in the dining room for the birthday boy.  We had birthday food, too-  pizza and cake.  The boys were thrilled!  A precedent the grandparents have set for themselves is giving the boys a gift on their own birthdays.  So, everyone got an age appropriate sized football.  Tommy got the only "real" football.  The others got Nerf ones.  So the evening ended with footballs flying through the house.  It was a good time!

Saturday morning, I took Tommy biking on the C&O canal toe path (no vehicles) and I ran.  We did a total of 4 miles and that was without stopping for either of us!  I was proud of Tommy for keeping up.  I was pleased that my pace is a comfortable biking pace for him.  I was a little unprepared for the chilliness of the morning, but that went away after the first mile!  I enjoyed spending some time with Tommy.  Hoping for the day when we both can run together.

That weekend also happened to be their church's anniversary where George is on staff.  They always do a big dinner and a couple other activities and bring in a speaker.  This year of all people it was Josh's boss- Jim Lytle.  We've attended that church numerous times in the 9 years we've been together, but I must say it was really odd hearing Jim who was out of context down there!  Nevertheless, it was fun to hear him and spend a little time with him and Diane.  Josh's parents had them for dessert Sat. evening and we all visited for awhile.

We went home Sunday after the usual Sunday tradition of eating at this pizza buffet right near their church.  The grandparents found this place last spring and the boys have probably eaten there at least 6 times.  I know this was the 3rd time for Josh and I.  I wonder if we will ever have Sunday dinner anywhere else!  Lots of pizza and not enough sleep equaled a quiet drive home as everyone slept most of the way (including me!)  We got the kids back in time for their kids' choir practice and our adult small group.  It was a nice weekend away.
