My mother-in-law was able to get us a half bushel of apples from a relative who lives next to an orchard. In the past, we've made applesauce with her, but there wasn't time this year. I also have the capability to make applesauce easily with my fruit and vegetable strainer Kitchen Aid attachment!
Josh decided last night that 8:45pm would be a good time to start the process! :( I don't think he remembered how long it takes to cut up 1/2 bushel of apples! Thankfully, my strainer strains out the cores, seeds, and skins, but I still needed to boil the apples before I could put them through the device!
I had approximately 6 pot fulls of apples to boil-- each taking 10-15 min to come to a boil!
This is my strainer. I push the apples down the chute and the pulp/water comes out the bottom. The seeds, skins, and stems come out the front.
Yummy applesauce goodness! I don't add any sugar. The apples have plenty of natural sweetness!
This is after I canned them using the hot water bath method. This took an additional 15 minutes, but now I don't have to freeze the jars. I have more shelf space than freezer space. It made 12 quarts and a little extra to spare! We will enjoy homemade applesauce for many months!
I got caught up on your blog finally. :) I love that you're doing this. :) I've been kinda bad at it lately mostly b/c I don't know what else to write about and dno't want to bombard everyone with feelings of sadness. But I'm hagingin in there.
ReplyDeleteAnyways - reading all these posts made me miss you a lot!!!!
